Learning Log 6

In three lessons,we have learnt the basic literary devices and the advanced literary devices.Some of the examples of the basic literary devices are "Simile" and "Kinaesthetic".An example of Simile is "Whining as a cat",which suggests how weak one is and the attention one needs,just like a small powerless cat whining for attention.For kinaesthetic,an example would be "Her nose always dribbled,her mouth had a peculiar twitch".It describes a girl's facial feature,and most likely a weak disabled girl.Two examples of advanced literary devices are,"Incomplete sentence" and "Repetition".An example of incomplete sentence is,"Father,everyday he will tell me to study hard and get good marks,but even though I study very hard,cannot remember or concentrate."This suggests that the narrator is frustrated about her inability to do well in her studies.An example of repetition is,"Must pass,pass,pass!".This probably tells us that the narrator is determined to escape her current situation so to do well in her studies to please her parents.Literary devices are important in Literature as it's needed quite a lot,thus it's one the most important part in Literature.However,I think that the feelings you get from reading the passage and ability to understand the passage is the key to doing well in Literature.Literature is all about feelings,literary devices and vocabulary are just words to express your feelings.

I have learnt that an unseen poem is a poem that less people know about it and thus it is most likely a poem that we have never seen before.When approaching such poem,we have to read the poem a few times quickly and pick out words or phrases that are difficult to understand or catches your attention.Then,read the poem again but this time,slowly and imagine what the poem is like and take note about your own feelings when reading through it.Making notes on margins of the poem may help to remind you of your reactions and feelings and you can know what you feel at the point of time and what you feel when you read the whole poem and understood it.Then,we would have to take a brief look at the questions on the text and make notes on the margin at the parts where you think most likely the answer could be found to the question.When we are answering the questions,e should make sure we understand each question what is it trying to ask and we should use PEEL when needed.Quoting from the text is another way which may be easy and efficient way to answer questions,however we must keep them short and it must be relevant to the point we are making.We should never rush through reading the passage and we should always read all the instructions given before answering the questions.Quoting long passages and answering with general statements without explaining the reason is not advisable as it may result in loss of marks.We should also avoid only writing what is happening,even if you are told to do just that.Some may think that organizing is pointless as it would not help one to get more marks,but it's related to one getting mark.Organizing your answers is important as if your answers are untidy,the reader may find it difficult to read what you are trying to say and if the marker could not read what you are writing or find it difficult to read,there might be deduction of marks,hence organizing is important.There are two techniques of organizing your answers,which are:
"IBC",Introduction,Body,and Conclusion.
"PEEL",Point,Explain & Elaborate,Evidence & Example,Link.
Having the ability to critique and analyse the text while displaying keen sensitivity to the techniques used,and the ability to communicate your argument coherently to the examiner through clear writing and effective organization are the two key skills to doing well in Unseen section.
