Prison

There's an evil warden in a prison that's corrupted and always abuses the prisoners. There's an old prisoner being sentenced with lifetime imprisonment. However,he has a son outside and had been writing letter to him and bribing the warden to send the letters to his son.In a week's time, the old prisoner will be granted clemency and be able to meet his son as long as there's no trouble. The warden bribed his roommate, the "king"of the prisoners to make trouble so the old prisoner would not be able to see his son.The next day,the roommate sneaked into the warden's room to steal the keys. When he opened the drawers, the drawers were full of letters. He realized that the son of the old prisoner had  actually died 10 years ago and the warden was the one that had been writing letters to him.Outside the cells where the guards are,a huge gang of prisoners with metal pipes dragging the warden, approached the guards. The guards were afraid and hid in the cells instead. In one of the cell, the old prisoner was there,he told the rioters to stop the foolish action  and they were angered, thus beating the old man up.The fainted warden woke up,and fought with the prisoners.Later, the warden and the guards together with the innocent prisoners escaped. Most of them are injured and needed medical supplies.Soon, the prisoners catch up.The warden told the guards to take the injured ones away and gave one of the guards a letter and told him to give it to the old prisoner, then shutting the gate behind him tight and gripping it tight so not to let the other prisoners get in.The prisoners took their weapons and smashed at the warden after another, but he won't fall. After awhile, the warden finally fell to the ground and the prisoners dragged him to the disciplinary room, where the warden used to torture the prisoners. When they went in,what they saw was the "king" of the prisoner and he took down each and every of the rioters himself. The "king" was released after a week and the prisoners were not punished as the warden himself took the punishment by quitting his job.The "king" stopped him at the doors of the prison and told him to get back in.When he went back, all the prisoners were dressed as guards and the guards were faking fallen asleep. The warden went to the room where the old prisoner's supposed to be meeting his son, they were allowed to meet for 10 minutes.
The warden sat down, but looking down, throughout the conversation.
Old prisoner: Good grief, now we have so many nasty-looking guards around now.
The warden was uneasy and kept gripping his legs.
Old prisoner: I heard that you quit your job.Do you have another job yet?
Warden: No,I am searching still.
Old prisoner: I see...
The warden gripping his legs again.
Old prisoner: Well,I wish you the best of luck.Try not to get yourself called an evil warden again.
Warden, gripping his legs then clenching his fist and letting go: Yeah...
Old prisoner: Guard,we're finished.
Warden panicked and said: Wait, old man!I've been...
Old prisoner: Don't say anything...We were able to make small talk, just like always. That's all I need.
Warden: Old man, did you...
Old prisoner: I read the letter,it was better than usual. But you handwriting is still ugly as ever.Warden,I've always been writing letters to my son outside.A son who turned out to have a nasty personality, but that foolish son of mine is dedicated to his job.
Old prisoner: I'm glad I was able to see you today.
Warden, looking down and gripping his leg.
Old prisoner: Will you continue to write?
Warden, gripping his leg with even more force and tears flowing down his cheeks while pulling his cap down slightly: Yeah,I will.
Old prisoner: It's a promise.
Warden: Yeah, whoever breaks the promise gets sent to the disciplinary room.

The letter is written:
Greetings,
I apologize that this isn't a letter from your son.If you are reading this letter,it means that I have disappeared for one reason or another, and you are no longer receiving letters from your son. However, you don't need to worry.Your son is doing fine. His work has taken him to another country,so it's difficult for him to send letters. There is a lot of paperwork that has to be done before you can receive mail from another country.I apologize that I was unable to continue delivering his letters.I'm sure you no longer remember, but when I was first assigned this position,I was a complete outsider. After causing trouble wherever I went,my parents dumped me in prison. The hardened prisoners weren't going to listen to a clueless young fool, and the guards resented me for my connections.I would find myself going to the oldest prisoner, you. The rules of the prison, methods for handling nasty prisoners, the way to strike underhanded deals,as well as the fact that outside light was a ray of hope for the prisoners in their dark cells...I learned everything from you.I can't say that I am a respectable man of society.I'm aware that I have nothing to be proud of.However, you are the reason that I am able to stand on my own, unsightly legs. All I could manage was to help deliver those letters. However,I would have been happy to know that they give you hope. There will be significant delay before the next letter arrives, but please don't forget that there is always someone outside who is thinking of you. Please remember that your son is not the only person, who cares about you.It was nice knowing you.
From the evil warden.

Story is taken from Gintama episode 225 and 226.

Learning Log 7

I think my group did a good job on the Literature's Romeo & Juliet performance. However,I thought we could have done better if I shouted even louder during the actual performance as the role of Tybalt. My members told me to shout slightly above normal voice because the camera won't be able to record my voice clearly and  I did so but it turned out not conveying my anger,I only used about 25% of the voice I usually uses during rehearsals.I really regretted not shouting with in my loudest voice.I was always quiet in class and nobody actually saw me shouted before or even raise my voice slightly a bit.During the rehearsals, everyone was really shocked when I actually shouted my lines and acted angrily as it was the first time they actually saw me being angry. It was also fun competing with other group's Tybalt in showing the anger. We had spent a lot of time on this project and I think it was worth the time because we did well in the performance.Even before we were told to rehearse,we had already rehearsed a few times and we spent the whole one-week-holiday and the days before the performance rehearsing. We really put in a lot of effort into this performance hoping to do well in it.Though we had rehearsed countless times, just before it's our turn to perform and during the performance, all of us were actually really nervous. The time we spent together were also valuable and enjoyable.Definitely,my group's performance is up to my expectation.I think everyone did great, but I could have helped my group doing better by shouting what I normally do during rehearsals.I have learnt that doing well in the performance requires time.I was thinking that just a scene of the act actually takes months to prepare, how much time do you exactly need to use to prepare for the whole act?I think it's fair, those that put in efforts score, while those that does not will not score. The day before the performance,I saw commitment's acts, they were really good and almost perfect. When I saw the first group's act,I was really nervous, even as the audience. That was because I was thought every group's standard was that high. But I was sort of relieved after I saw the second play by another class which I think they did not put much effort in because most of them forgets their lines a lot of times and does not know when and what to do when it's their turn to act.I think  spoiled their performance so badly that I actually started pitying them.I would recommend this performance to the juniors because this performance is really interesting and enjoyable and I think they too, will enjoy it very much.I really liked this project, and feel a little sad after the final performance ended.

Learning Log 6

In three lessons,we have learnt the basic literary devices and the advanced literary devices. Some of the examples of the basic literary devices are "Simile" and "Kinaesthetic".An example of Simile is "Whining as a cat",which suggests how weak one is and the attention one needs, just like a small powerless cat whining for attention. For kinaesthetic,an example would be "Her nose always dribbled, her mouth had a peculiar twitch".It describes a girl's facial feature, and most likely a weak disabled girl. Two examples of advanced literary devices are,"Incomplete sentence" and "Repetition".An example of incomplete sentence is,"Father, everyday he will tell me to study hard and get good marks, but even though I study very hard, cannot remember or concentrate."This suggests that the narrator is frustrated about her inability to do well in her studies. An example of repetition is,"Must pass, pass, pass!".This probably tells us that the narrator is determined to escape her current situation so to do well in her studies to please her parents.Literary devices are important in Literature as it's needed quite a lot, thus it's one the most important part in Literature. However,I think that the feelings you get from reading the passage and ability to understand the passage is the key to doing well in Literature.Literature is all about feelings, literary devices and vocabulary are just words to express your feelings.

Learning Log 5

I have learnt that an unseen poem is a poem that less people know about it and thus it is most likely a poem that we have never seen before. When approaching such poem,we have to read the poem a few times quickly and pick out words or phrases that are difficult to understand or catches your attention. Then, read the poem again but this time, slowly and imagine what the poem is like and take note about your own feelings when reading through it.Making notes on margins of the poem may help to remind you of your reactions and feelings and you can know what you feel at the point of time and what you feel when you read the whole poem and understood it.Then,we would have to take a brief look at the questions on the text and make notes on the margin at the parts where you think most likely the answer could be found to the question. When we are answering the questions,e should make sure we understand each question what is it trying to ask and we should use PEEL when needed.Quoting from the text is another way which may be easy and efficient way to answer questions, however we must keep them short and it must be relevant to the point we are making. We should never rush through reading the passage and we should always read all the instructions given before answering the questions.Quoting long passages and answering with general statements without explaining the reason is not advisable as it may result in loss of marks. We should also avoid only writing what is happening, even if you are told to do just that. Some may think that organizing is pointless as it would not help one to get more marks, but it's related to one getting mark.Organizing your answers is important as if your answers are untidy, the reader may find it difficult to read what you are trying to say and if the marker could not read what you are writing or find it difficult to read, there might be deduction of marks, hence organizing is important. There are two techniques of organizing your answers, which are:
"IBC",Introduction,Body,and Conclusion.
"PEEL",Point,Explain & Elaborate,Evidence & Example,Link.
Having the ability to critique and analyse the text while displaying keen sensitivity to the techniques used, and the ability to communicate your argument coherently to the examiner through clear writing and effective organization are the two key skills to doing well in Unseen section.

Learning Log 4

What have you learnt through the performance, good practices:I have learnt that it is really hard to act as witches, especially the part where you have to sound like a witch. There's no problem sounding like a witch and I think everyone can do it,the problem is just that it's embarrassing to sound like one.I also find it not easy to have perfect timing when using powerpoint slides or video. It's also not easy to have perfect timing with your partners, especially the part where everyone has to say it together. It sounded really bad when some group's timing were messed up totally.
Commendations on good work(Done by peers):Some groups did very well as they are not afraid of embarrassing themselves and their voices were clear,I thought they had done a good job but I can't remember which groups were they unfortunately.
Self evaluation on your own performance:I don't think my group and myself did a good job,but I don't think we had done badly either. We had props,make-ups,costumes and powerpoint slides and none of us had forgotten the lines. The only thing I thought my group had done badly is the last part where we made a mistake.I started saying the last line but my group did not say anything,I tried saying it again and they still did not say anything. It was when the third try we all said the last line together. Both my group members had tried and said in a wicked voice, even though it's not very good, they still tried, but I did not,I just couldn't bring myself to say it,so I spoke in my normal voice throughout the performance.

Learning Log 3

Macbeth Act 1 Scene 1 individuals role playing as witches:We formed a group that consists of three people. We had not practiced at acting as witches and acting infront of the class.I think during the actual acting infront of the whole class,it would be hard and embarrassing as it would not be easy to mimic the voice of a witch and act as one.
Lesson on Act 1 Scene 2:I think the lesson was very meaningful as what were taught during the lesson came out during the common test, thus I find it very useful, though I could not remember them.We learned "Brandished Steel" which refers to a person who uses his sword in mastery and "Valor's minon" which refers to a person with courage and determination. We also learned about the text and the characters.
Group discussion on Comic Grid:I had two discussion with two different groups because I had forgotten to write a sentence at the bottom of each box.During the first discussion, each person was assigned to a group number, then we moved to the group we were assigned to and had discussion. The next discussion during the next lesson,I had forgotten to wrote the sentence for each boxes, hence I was asked to go outside of the class and only return to the class after completing the sentences. After returning to the class,I was asked to go to a table and wait for other people outside to complete their sentences. The next two people that came in were assigned to my group and there were my new group members. We then exchanged our comic grids and looked at each other's grid, finnaly discussing about each other's work and the lesson ended.

Learning Log 2

Demonstration by peers:Though the lesson is enjoyable, but it's being repeated. Two weeks ago's monday lesson,we had demonstration on Macbeth Act 1 scene 1 but we had the same lesson two weeks ago's wednessday lesson. It's not easy if you go up and act as the witches. Most people will be embarrased to act as the witch as the witch's voice sounds funny and they would be laughed at classmates.

Discussion on Supertitions:I had learnt more supertitions I don't know from other people in my group and they are interesting.Though, the lesson was being repeated just like Macbeth Act 1 Scene 1.Last week's wednessday lesson,we got into groups and had the discussion on supertitions, though we haven't present due to lackage of time. This week's wednessday's lesson we got into groups again, though different group and had the same discussion on Supertitions again and had some presentations. To be honest,it's getting a little annoying as we kept having the same lessons over and over again...Here's what I should be presenting.

a)If a black cat crosses your path, you'll have bad luck-Black cats have often been considered evil.black is the colour of evil, and cats are synonymons with witches. If a Black cat crosses someone's path,it creates a line of evil that you will have to cross to get past.

b)Walking under a ladder brings bad luck-Once upon a time, criminals were hung from ladders set up against the side of a buiding or wall. The triangle shap that was created was believed to make a door to evil of hell.Pushing through it brought that evil over the person and brought them bad luck.

c)Break a mirror and have seven years of bad luck-It was believed that mirrors contained a person's soul.If the mirrror is broken, the persons's soul is released from the body, which is a good reason for bad luck.

d)Protection with salt-Salt was a precious and expensive commodity a long time ago,and because it was so important,it was given magical propeties.

e)If you find a four-leaf clover, you will have good luck-As four-leaf clovers are extremely rare,it it believed that if you ever find one,it will bring you good luck.

Presentation on supertitions:My group did not get to present as there's not enough time.By looking at other group's presentation,I learnt many more supertitions that I don't know.

Overall, the lessons are enjoyable but it will definitly be better if the lessons are not being repeated anymore as it had been repeated twice and I think that's one of the reasons why our class are way behind others.
